Every time you swipe your debit card, there is a certain number that it would take to ’round up’ to the nearest dollar. Example Below:
Say you spent $2.75 at the gas station. The APP (User controls this setting) will then show you list of all your purchases on a screen with a ‘Round Up’ option. This ’round up’ feature will add the remaining 25 cents to your account (2.75 + .25 cents = $3.00). The idea is to save and accrue the cents left over on all of your daily purchases. What is Acorns doing with the money I put in?
This is the most biggest question I always get from people. However, the answer is simple. Acorns has designed 5 different investment portfolio types. There are different risks/benefits depending on which portfolio you decide to choose. If you choose an aggressive portfolio, you will most likely experience more fluctuations. If you choose a conservative portfolio to invest your money in, then your returns on investment will be much smaller, however, the risk you are taking will drop significantly.
The APP has a projected returns feature and if you start with just $5 in your account today: The APP is projecting that the original $5 I put in will be worth $3,813 by the time I am age 30. (in 8 years) That may not seem like a lot of money now, but that is just with the bare minimum of just putting $5 in my account. Imagine if you save money in Acorns on a weekly, or monthly basis.
